MYO FAQ
Answers to common questions.

How long does the Tongue Tie Release process take?
I proudly offer one of the fastest turn-arounds in the business of myo: 10 weeks start to finish, including the release by your chosen provider. With that being said, I tend to require even more commitment from all my clients in order for us to have great results!
We meet once weekly via zoom, where I will assign your daily exercise regimen for the next week. Your “homework” usually takes 5-7 mins morning and night.
At the end of our 10 weeks, all clients should be able to retain their new healthier habits and strength indefinitely! Enjoy your new happier and healthier life!

How soon after surgery can I sing?
You can talk immediately afterwards – however, it may be uncomfortable! Most people are in pain for 24 to 72 hours. You can sing at any point without harming your chords, however, you may be wiggly wobbly for a few weeks. I recommend not doing any auditions or solo recitals for about 2 to 3 weeks afterwards.
-
Do I need really need myo before a tongue tie release?
Yes!!!!!! It is absolutely imperative that you work with a myo specialist both BEFORE AND AFTER your tongue tie release! If not, your chances for your tongue tie re-attaching afterwards increases exponentially- it can even attach WORSE that before!
Also, myo work beforehand increases your chance of a great surgery and less recovery time- so it’s really a no-brainer!
-
Will a tongue tie release change my voice?
No. Your vocal color, and timber is uniquely your own! What you will experience is more freedom, ease, and new choices in your technique! You can always choose to do the same vocal technique you had beforehand, but now you will have more options, and in an easier freer way!

What is Myofunctional Therapy and why do I need it?
”Myo” = Muscles
Myofunctional Therapy is quite similar to a physical therapist for the head, mouth, and neck. We teach exercises that both strengthen those muscles, and to move in healthier and more balanced ways.
I wouldn’t quite call myself a voice teacher. A voice teacher’s primary goal is to improve the quality of sound. My primary goal is to eliminate malicious compensations, and to teach and provide healthy and sustainable movements for the voice and body.

Will my insurance cover this?
Good news! Many insurances do cover some, most, or all portions of both the release surgery and the myo work that goes with it. Even adults are commonly covered! (Hooray!)
We recommend checking with both your dental AND medical insurances- as this procedure can be billed under either depending on your company and coverage.
-
Is Myofunctional Therapy Difficult / Painful?
All of our muscular exercises are easy, simple, and even a little fun and silly! The key to success is motivation and commitment.
Each set of exercises takes about 5-10 minutes a day and can be done at home, in your car, on your work break- almost anywhere!
It may be challenging and weird to do some of the motions at first- but myo shouldn’t ever cause pain or health issues when used correctly!

Can just myo exercises improve my singing without a release?
Yes, definitely! However, a tongue tie can determine how much you are able to improve, and in what ways. For example- just myo may be able to improve your vowel and tone quality, but usually singer’s need a release to get complete relief of overactive jaw or soft palate issues.
